i’m this type of tree

series of digital performances as a part of the psychogenealogy lab

about

In the psychogenealogy lab, researchers from St. Petersburg along with participants selected through an open call explored lost and "erased" aspects of their national identity at the end of August.

They sought and found the strength to reflect and speak about these aspects. after that, there was individual work with participants on the texts created during the lab and the search for a way to represent them.

From November to January, three online performances were presented, incorporating an adapted algorithm of exercises for the audience, enabling them to activate their own reflective mechanisms on the topic of identity.

"Sometimes the past (or the present) fractures into tiny shards. We may not see them, but they make their presence felt. If one of these shards embeds itself, like in childhood, in a bare foot, it will hurt. But, when found, placed in the palm, or turned in the fingers in the light, you can see the sun through it. We've explored these fragments and invite you to look at them together with us."

katya - Kazy - Karina

"Our project — for me, it's an attempt to name and acknowledge my roots. To forge a connection with the past that has been hidden and excluded in our lineage. And to discover those parts of myself that I hadn't recognized before."

Julia

"It's as if we've taken a big beautiful puzzle where each piece fits tightly with the others, creating a clear image — and then began to examine the individual details, appreciating their beauty and uniqueness, their completion, and their integrity apart from the larger picture. In another sense, this performance tells of a new way to see ourselves and our lives. Ultimately, it's about people — those who are no longer here, and those who are; it's about finding the ability to appreciate and not exclude either group."

«я шла по лесу изучая
какой листок с моим похож
мичурина подозреваю
ну, что ж

порассажали предки древов
раскинулись на пол земли
«а я теряю свои корни»
в бали»

sima

"For me, this project is a journey of connecting and embracing various aspects of myself, uncovering family mysteries and traumas through psychogenealogical research. It's about self-reflection and addressing previously unresolved issues that have accumulated over several generations in my family and have affected my life in constantly changing realities."

Natasha

"1) Reunion with kindred souls
2) Attempt to dig deep into myself
3) Standing at the red corner"

Oleg Zinchenko

"Our performance is an attempt to reclaim lost identity without patriotic frenzy about the voice of blood, the relay of generations, and other nonsense."

оlesya

galina

"Family traumas, anecdotes, legends, whims — these are the fragile materials from which our stories are woven. 'I`m this type of tree' is a space where these stories stop being something out of place, shameful, like a photo album reluctantly leafed through by a bored guest, like an unsolicited gossip. The tool of attention restores value to our stories, endows some with it for the first time, reconciles, and sometimes surprises. Is it really all me?"
